Giving out units

Awarding units to a person and attaching the rules.

Company adminGrants & vesting

A grant is one award to one person. Set it up once, and from then on it runs itself.

Creating one#

  1. 1Select New grant.
  2. 2Choose the employee.
  3. 3Enter the number of units. Check what is left in your pool first.
  4. 4Pick the earning schedule. This decides everything about how it is earned.
  5. 5Set the start date. Earning counts from here, not from their first day at the company.
  6. 6Save. They are emailed and it appears in their portal immediately.
Note. You can grant units to somebody who has not accepted their invitation yet. The units wait for them.

Deciding how many#

There is no formula. What most companies do:

  • Decide the total pool first, and keep a reserve for people you have not hired yet.
  • Group roles into a few bands rather than pricing each person individually.
  • Award in round numbers. 350 is memorable, 347 invites an argument.
  • Write down why each band is what it is, before anybody asks.

Setting a goal on a grant#

Open the grant and use Set KPI to attach the goal that person is working towards, along with their target. That is what they see on their review screen and what they claim against.

Changing or cancelling#

Open the grant to adjust it. Cancelling stops all further earning, which is what you normally want when somebody leaves.

Careful. Cancelling a grant is visible to the employee. Talk to them first. Anything they have already earned is a matter for your agreement with them, not something the system decides for you.

Watching your pool#

The screen shows what is issued against what exists. Every unit you give out dilutes the value of the others, since the same pool of value is split more ways. Give out too many and the number on everybody's screen goes down.
