Creating goals

Defining a goal once, then reusing it across your team.

Company adminGrants & vestingKPIs

A goal, called a KPI, is defined once for your company and then reused. Define it properly the first time and you never type it again.

The two kinds#

A number to reach
Something you can measure, such as reaching 90 percent of orders entered directly into the system. You set the target, and where the person is starting from.
A yes or no
Something that either happened or it did not, such as completing a certification. No numbers involved.
Tip. Use yes or no goals more than you expect. They are honest about things that are not really measurable, and they are far quicker to review.

Creating one#

  1. 1Select Create a new KPI.
  2. 2Give it a name the employee will understand on their own screen. Write Orders entered directly into the CRM, not CRM metric 2.
  3. 3Choose whether it is a number to reach or a yes or no.
  4. 4For a number, set the target and the starting point. The gap between them is what you are asking for.
  5. 5Save. It is now available everywhere in your workspace.
Note. You can also create a goal without leaving the earning schedule screen. The Create a new KPI option sits inside the goal picker there, so you do not have to back out and start again.

Writing a good goal#

  • One thing only. If it has an *and* in it, it is two goals.
  • Measurable by someone else. If only the employee can tell whether it happened, reviewing it will be uncomfortable.
  • Set a real starting point. Going from 41 percent to 90 percent is a serious ask. Going from 88 to 90 is not. Recording the starting point keeps everyone honest.
  • Reachable. A goal nobody believes in does not motivate anybody.

Retiring a goal#

Retire a goal you no longer use and it stops appearing in the picker. Anything already relying on it keeps working, and past claims stay in your history.
